2027 Social Security COLA After August’s Inflation Report: Why the Final Percentage Is Still Pending

Learn why September's CPI-W reading, not August's inflation headline, completes the 2027 Social Security COLA calculation.

August's inflation report does not set the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, because the legal formula needs the full July-through-September CPI-W average. The final percentage is pending until the September 2026 CPI-W reading is released. CPI-W is the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, the inflation measure used for Social Security COLAs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that CPI-W reached 328.481 in August, up 0.4% for the month and 3.5% from a year earlier.

Why August cannot determine the COLA

Social Security compares the current year's third-quarter average CPI-W with the third-quarter average used for the prior COLA determination. That means July, August, and September 2026 all count in the 2027 calculation, according to the Social Security Administration's COLA information.

One monthly reading can raise or lower the quarter's average, but it cannot complete it. August is the middle month of the required quarter.

The remaining date to watch

The September CPI report is scheduled for release on October 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

It supplies the final CPI-W figure needed to calculate the third-quarter average and determine the 2027 COLA. BLS's CPI release schedule lists that date and time. Readers tracking estimates should treat any percentage published before that release as an estimate, not the final Social Security adjustment.

CPI-U headlines are not the COLA measure

The August report also showed a 3.4% annual increase in CPI-U, the broader Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers. That widely reported figure is not the measure the Social Security statute uses.

For the COLA calculation, CPI-W is the relevant index. In August, CPI-W rose 3.5% year over year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' August 2026 CPI report.

What the formula means for benefit planning

The COLA is based on a quarter-to-quarter comparison, not on the August annual inflation rate. A higher third-quarter CPI-W average than the comparison-quarter average produces an increase; if it does not exceed that earlier average, there is no Social Security or SSI COLA under the formula.

The 2026 adjustment shows the timing in practice. Social Security based its 2.8% COLA on CPI-W growth between the third quarter of 2024 and the third quarter of 2025, as explained in the SSA's 2026 COLA fact sheet.

When a confirmed increase would show up

For household budgeting, separate the announcement from the payment date. A confirmed 2027 COLA would generally apply to Social Security benefits payable in December 2026 and received in January 2027.

SSI recipients normally receive the increased payment in late December. Until the September CPI-W figure is incorporated, keep benefit budgets based on the current payment amount and treat projected increases as provisional.

  • Watch for the October 14 CPI release.
  • Check whether a projected figure uses CPI-W and the full third-quarter average.
  • Avoid treating CPI-U's annual rate as the final COLA percentage.
