Report SSI income changes to SSA through your my Social Security account, the Mobile Wage Reporting app, telephone wage reporting, or your local office. Report gross wages every month you earn them, and report other income changes no later than the 10th day of the next month. SSI, or Supplemental Security Income, is a monthly federal payment for people with limited income and resources, including adults age 65 and older. For retirement-age recipients, even small pensions, part-time wages, or family cash support can change the payment.

What income must you report?
Reportable earned income includes wages and self-employment income. Reportable unearned income includes Social Security benefits, pensions, and cash from friends or relatives. The Social Security Administration lists both categories as reportable for SSI recipients, including those 65 and older, in its October advocate update.
Report the full amount before taxes or deductions. For wages, use total gross monthly pay from pay stubs. Keep pay stubs and records of pensions, benefits, and cash gifts to support accurate reports.
When is the report due?
File by the 10th day of the month after the month the change occurred. A January pay increase means a February 10 deadline. Late reports must still be filed because they affect eligibility and payment amount.
Working recipients should aim earlier. The Social Security Administration encourages reporting prior-month wages by the 6th of the current month to allow a correct calculation, according to its October wage-reporting guidance. Early filing reduces overpayments and underpayments.
How do you file a wage report?
One report does not carry forward. SSI is recalculated monthly, so file every month wages are earned.

The mobile option is the free SSA Mobile Wage Reporting app from Apple App Store or Google Play. Phone and in-person options help recipients without internet access.
- Gather all pay stubs for the month and add total gross wages.
- Choose a filing channel: online account, mobile app, automated phone system, 1-800-772-1213, or local office.
- Submit last month's wages early in the current month.
- Save confirmation numbers and copies of stubs.
What other changes affect SSI?
Living arrangements, household members, and rent or utility costs also affect payment. Countable resources count too, with limits of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. A move in with family, a new housemate, or a drop in rent can change countable support.
Report these changes on the same 10th-of-next-month schedule. Include dates, amounts, and who shares household costs. Complete records prevent SSA from using an outdated living situation.
What happens if you miss a report?
Late or missing reports can create an overpayment that must be repaid within 30 days. SSA may also impose penalties that lower SSI payments.
Continued failure can lead to suspension or termination of benefits, as described in the agency's overpayment rules. Sign up for free monthly email or text wage-reporting reminders. Pair the reminder with a folder for stubs and unearned-income records.
