How Does the October 14 Social Security Change Affect Retirement Benefits?

See when the 2027 COLA starts, what a 3.5% bump pays, and why October checks stay normal.

The October 14 change sets the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment that raises Social Security retirement checks starting in January 2027. A cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, is an annual inflation increase; it does not cut October payments, which follow the normal schedule. My Federal Retirement reports the announcement is scheduled for Oct.

14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. ET with the September inflation release, in its COLA watch update. SSA's Choose Work blog and VisaVerge report the adjustment covers about 75 million Social Security and SSI recipients, with higher Social Security paid in January 2027 and SSI on Dec. 31, 2026.

What happens on October 14?

The CPI Inflation Calculator, citing the BLS schedule, confirms September 2026 inflation data arrives Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.

That release supplies the final number needed to set the 2027 COLA. Before that morning, published percentages are only estimates. The October 14 figure turns the forecast into the official rate used for 2027 checks.

How is the increase calculated?

My Federal Retirement explains SSA averages CPI-W for July through September 2026 and compares it with the third-quarter 2025 average of 317.265. The percentage gain is rounded to the nearest 0.1%.

July CPI-W was 327.104 and August was 328.481, for a 3.32% running average. The Senior Citizens League forecasts a final 3.5% COLA, as discussed by Motley Fool.

When will you see a change?

The 2027 increase does not arrive in October. Social Security retirement benefits rise in January 2027, while SSI moves earlier, on Dec. 31, 2026.

Oct. 14 is also a normal payment day, InvestOzora explains in its October payment schedule. The October timing is:.

  • birthdays on the 1st through 10th: paid Oct. 14
  • other birthdays: paid Oct. 21 or Oct. 28

What would 3.5% mean each month?

A 3.5% COLA would raise an average $1,940 retired-worker check by about $67.90, to about $2,007 monthly, according to Gannett reporting of a Senior Citizens League forecast in its October payment and COLA report. Your dollar gain depends on your current benefit, so a lower check gains less and a higher check gains more.

That gross gain may not all reach you. The NY Post notes higher Medicare Part B premiums, announced in November, can reduce the net check increase, in its October outlook. Wait for the COLA notice, then compare the January deposit with the Medicare deduction.
