Yes — Social Security will boost 2027 payments for disability retirees by 3.6%. The Social Security Administration announced the cost-of-living adjustment for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, as reported in the SSA press release. Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, pays monthly benefits to workers who can no longer work because of a severe disability. The increase applies to Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance, including SSDI, with higher payments starting in January 2027.

How much will disability checks rise?
SSA estimates the average disabled-worker benefit will rise from $1,642 to $1,701 per month. That is a $59 monthly increase tied directly to the 3.6% adjustment, according to the SSA effects table.
For comparison, the average retired-worker benefit rises from $2,094 to $2,170, up $76. Your own amount depends on your earnings record and current benefit. Apply 3.6% to your present payment for a close estimate before notices arrive.
How did SSA set the 3.6% rate?
The adjustment equals inflation in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners, or CPI-W. It uses the average year-over-year gain for July, August and September as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Those three monthly gains were 3.40%, 3.52% and 3.93%, averaging to 3.6%, as described in Wolf Street analysis of BLS data. At 3.6%, the 2027 adjustment is the largest since the 8.7% COLA in 2023 and follows 2.8% in 2026.

When do you receive the increase?
You do not need to apply because SSA adds the COLA automatically. About 72 million Social Security beneficiaries plus about 7.3 million SSI recipients, about 76 million Americans total, receive the 2027 increase.
- SSI payments reflecting the COLA arrive Dec. 31, 2026
- Social Security payments reflecting the COLA arrive in January 2027

What will shrink the net gain?
Medicare Part B premiums taken from checks will offset part of the gain for many recipients. The 2026 Medicare Trustees Report projects the standard premium rising from $202.90 to $209.50 in 2027, as noted in the CPA Practice Advisor report on the Medicare projection.
That projected $6.60 rise would leave most of the $59 average SSDI increase intact. People with higher Part B premiums, tax withholding, or other deductions may keep less. Review your December notice and January deposit to see your exact net amount.
