The Social Security Administration will announce the official 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026.
The Detroit Free Press reports the date follows the September inflation release in Detroit Free Press announcement report. The COLA is the yearly inflation addition to Social Security benefits. Retirees can use the October figure to plan 2027 spending and check January payments.

Why October 14 Controls the Announcement
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has scheduled the September 2026 Consumer Price Index for Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern.
That report supplies the final price data SSA needs. The agency will announce later that same day. Check SSA statements that afternoon rather than morning CPI headlines.
How SSA Sets the Rate
By law SSA sets the COLA from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners (CPI-W). The Social Security Administration compares the July-September average to the same quarter last year in SSA COLA information.
The September reading completes the three-month average. Until it posts, the 2027 rate cannot be final.
What Forecasts Point To for 2027
The Senior Citizens League cut its 2027 forecast to 3.5% after the August inflation report released Sept. 11, down from 3.6% in August. Motley Fool reported the update on Oct. 9 in Motley Fool report on the TSCL estimate. AARP projected 3.6% while independent analyst Mary Johnson held at 3.5% in September.

Motley Fool described the spread on Sept. 20 as a narrow 3.4%-3.6% range. A 3.5% rise would add about $73 per month to the $2,088 average retired-worker benefit from August 2026. Motley Fool laid out that math on Oct. 2 in Motley Fool analysis of the dollar impact.
Who Gets Paid and When
The increase covers retirement, disability, survivor, and SSI beneficiaries. Motley Fool noted on Oct. 5 that higher Social Security payments start with January 2027 checks.

What Can Cut Your Net Gain
No rate is final until September CPI-W is published. VisaVerge notes rising Medicare Part B premiums, announced separately, can reduce the net gain.
Use announcement week for three checks. These steps protect your January budget: Compare your gross COLA to the Medicare notice. Adjust automatic transfers before the first higher check arrives.
- Wait for the Oct. 14 official rate before updating your budget
- Compare the gross increase to your Medicare premium notice
